Gombe State University was yesterday thrown into a state of panic and confusion as the anti-bomb squad of the Nigeria Police successfully detonated a bomb and other IEDs planted around the university.
Witnesses said the bomb was concealed in a polythene bag and carefully hidden between a faculty block and the administrative building of the university. The explosive devices were alo found hidden in various locations.
Witnesses recall that as soon as the first explosive was discovered, frightened workers and students scampered to safety but soon as more IEDs were uncovered, there was an exodus from the university campus to the adjoining community.
Security agencies that arrived the scene blocked all access roads to the university as they set out to comb the premises for bombs and other explosives.
The police public relations officer (PPRO), Gombe state command, DSP Fwaji B Attajiri who confirmed the story said that they were discovered in time before they exploded.
According to him, the devices were moved to a valley outside the university by the anti bomb squad where they were safely detonated adding that no one was harmed in the process.
Mr Fwaji assured residents that the situation had been brought under control and advised them to go about their normal businesses.
In a related development, shortly after the incident, police men raided areas around the university and arrested dozens of suspects.
