FCT minister says no going back on bus routes designation policy. The Federal Capital Territory Administration has announced designated routes four categories of commercial transport operators would henceforth ply under the new arrangement towards the successful implementation of routes delineation policy in Abuja. The four categories of operators recognised under the new arrangement include minibuses, high capacity buses, taxis and car hire services, just as several committees have been constituted by the Authorities to help enforce compliance. A statement signed by the Special Assistant on Media to the FCT Minister, Nosike Ogbuenyi, said the mini-buses were assigned 10 of the designated routes, while the high capacity buses were allotted seven routes to ply. The routes currently allocated to the mini-buses include Mombassa – Michael Okpara – Olusegun Obasanjo – Moshood Abiola Area 1; Area 1 – Gudu – Apo Mechanic Village; Area 1 – Cemetery – Apo Mechanic Village; Jabi – Mbora – Kaura – Gudu Market; Jabi – Mbora – Sun city – Apo Mechanic; Jabi – Mbora – Lugbe; Gwarinpa – Life Camp entrance – 1st Gate; Bwari Town – Dutse Alhaji – ONEX Expressway; Kubwa 2nd Gate – Gado Nasko Road – Kubwa 1st Gate; Mpape – Murtala Muhammed Expressway Junction. According to the statement, the minibuses are not permitted to ply routes allocated to high-capacity buses, including Wuse Market – Eagle Square – Asokoro – AYA – Nyanya; Area 3 Junction – Tafawa Balewa – Herbert Macauly Way – Berger Junction – Jabi; Gudu Market – Apo Quarters – Ahmadu Bello Way – Federal Secretariat – Gwarinpa; AYA – Shehu Shagari – Federal Secretariat – Transcorp – NICON Junction. Under the policy, the services of tricycles (Keke) have been restricted to Gwarinpa Estate; Life Camp; Kado and inside all large estates and the satellite towns. To enforce compliance FCT Minister, Bala Mohammed, last week addressed a stakeholders’ committee, made up of five sub-committees saddled with Enforcement and Monitoring, Pricing and Palliative, Security, Public Enlightenment and Strategy. The five panels, with members drawn from all the operators and stakeholders in the FCT transport sector, would liaise with the main committee headed by the FCT Permanent Secretary, Anthony Ozodinobi. According to Mr. Ozodinobi, all the licensed operators for tThe licensed mini bus operators include the Self-employed Commercial Drivers Association, SECDA, Abuja Transport Cooperative Society Limited, ATCS, and the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW. while the licensed high capacity bus operators included the Abuja Urban Mass Transport Company Limited, AUMTCO, SHAANXI Limited, FABREM Limited and ATCS. Similarly, the licensed taxi operators’ include PAT Nigeria Limited, Printfield Enterprises Limited, City Cab Limited and officials of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC and the Trade Union Congress, TUC. The Pricing and Palliative sub-Committee has the Director of Transport, Kola Garba, as Chairman, while the Public Enlightenment committee is headed by the Senior Special Assistant on Information Management Systems, Jamilah Tangaza and the Special Adviser on Security Matters to the FCT Minister, Abdullahi Kudu in charge of the Security committee. The Monitoring and Enforcement Committee is chaired by the Director of Abuja Environmental Protection Board, AEPB, Isa Shuaibu and the Strategy committee headed by Wilson Unaogwu. The FCT Minister, Senator Bala Mohammed had last Wednesday set up a broad-based Committee to fine-tune the implementation of the route delineation policy for mini and high capacity buses in the Federal Capital City. In approving the above measures, the minister said there was no going back on the route delineation policy as it is for the good of all the residents of the Federal Capital Territory. He said the enforcement of the route delineation together with other transport-related measures remain the best panacea to the problems bedeviling the transportation sector in the Federal Capital Territory, including illegal second hand car mart, unauthorized car wash centres and illegal motor parks in and around the Federal Capital City.
