World Families Day: 7 Celebrity Relatives Keeping it in the Family

p square

Venus and Serena Williams, Beyonce and Solange Knowles, Peter and Paul Okoye…notice a pattern?

Ever so often, there comes along an individual who either through talent, sheer hard work and a dint of luck or a combination of all three factors, does exceedingly well in their chosen craft, so much so that they acquire a celebrity status. It also so happens that ever so often there are two or more of such people who happen to share a family tree.
Its world families day and in celebration of this, we highlight a few Nigerian celebrity relatives who have succeeded in making a name for themselves and keeping it all in the family.
  • Don Jazzy & D’Prince: one is the ace producer and the other is the keeper of the goody bag. From the moment Don Jazzy burst into the scene with former bff D’Banj in 2004, he wasted no time at all in asserting himself as the music don..and rightly so. Its been hit after hit for the ace beats maker who went on to found Mavin records after Mo’Hits hit Splitsville. Younger brother, D’Prince hasn’t fared badly either. With no preferential treatment from Don Jazzy, D’Prince has steadily grown into his own shoes establishing himself as his own man and an artiste to reckon with in the Nigerian music scene…his shoddy lyrics notwithstanding.
  •  D’Banj & K’Switch: on the heels of Don Jazzy and D’Prince comes D’Banj and K’Switch. While D’Banj has been able to achieve a tremendous amount of success from the time he hit the music scene in 2004, K’Switch has remained more in the shadow, mostly riding off the coattails of his older brother’s success. Following the demise of Mo’Hits, K’Switch, naturally sided with older brother D’Banj and it remains to be seen how much K’Switch will measure up in the years to come.
  • Baba Dee & Sound Sultan: Although Sound Sultan credits his entry into the music industry largely to the influence of his older brother, Baba Dee, the latter has dropped off the scene in recent years, leaving Sound Sultan as the more visible of the brothers. The duo however reportedly have a few projects in the works as they recently purchased top-of-the-range audio vision equipment for their television production company.
  • Tosin Bucknor & Funke Bucknor-Obruthe: two sisters in two very different fields who have made a name for themselves completely independent of each other. Tosin is the gifted writer, singer/songwriter and on-air-personality at Top fm while Funke is the brain behind foremost events company, Zapphire.
  • Shina Peters, Clarence Peters & Clarion Chukwurah: where two artistes are gathered in coital bliss, let another artiste be brought forth. Shina Peters ruled the music scene in the 80s and early 90s with his afro juju music while Clarion was the toast of the small screen. It was a match made in artistic heaven. Fast forward 20-something years later and the product of that uber-charged union rules the music scene and small screen together as the most on-demand music video director in these parts. Who said blood aint thicker than water?
  • MI & Jesse Jagz: they’re the two short boys from the city called ‘J’. MI and Jesse have been in silent competition for the better part of their careers but then what siblings don’t engage in a little healthy sibling rivalry? While Jesse has achieved critical success both as a producer and a hip-hop artiste, MI has been more in the frontline achieving both commercial and critical success with his body of works. Both however remain crucial in the evolution of hip-hop music in Nigeria. Recently decamping from his Chocolate city label which he shared with older brother MI, it should be interesting to watch the new turns Jesse will take with his career.
  • Banky W & Dare Art-Alade: recent tweets from the duo revealed that the sexy crooners are more than colleagues after all. Often pitched against each other owing to their sultry voice and even sultrier looks and sophisticated mien, Dare and Banky are cousins who certainly prove that there’s no escaping the gene pool.
