2015 ELECTION: Jonathan Must Contest - Presidency

Indications that President Goodluck Jonathan is not ready to vacate power by May 29, 2015, has emerged even as his foot-soldiers continue to engage in war of words with those trying to suggest or put in place any process that would prevent him from contesting the presidential election in 2015.
Consequently, the Presidency has dared the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, insisting there their ongoing amendment to the constitution would fail as President Jonathan would not accept it...
The amendment by the Senate seeks to reduce the tension in the country due to the conduct of election every four years, most of which goes into campaign rather than development. The bill, when passed, would peg the tenure of office of President and Governors at 6years single tenure.
President Jonathan and some category of governors would not participate.
But Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Dr. Ahmed Gulak, said this in a chat with Punch in Abuja that the National Assembly has not right to make an amendment that would short-change his boss, Mr Jonathan, saying he was elected under a constitution that allows him two terms of four years.
“It is not a fair amendment to target a particular group. That proposal will not scale through. You can’t short-change some people in the name of amending the constitution. I am sure there will be some considerations and the proposal will fail.
“The President and some governors were elected under a constitution that allows them to contest two terms of four years each. You can’t change the rule midway,” the Presidency insisted.
