Former Super Eagles’ coach and member of the technical committee of the Nigeria Football Federation, Christian Chukwu (MFR), has applauded the national team after its 2-0 defeat of the Bafana Bafana of South Africa on Wednesday in this year’s annual Mandela Challenge Cup contest.
Chukwu, who described the result as fantastic said it would serve as a morale-booster for the Stephen Keshi-tutored Super Eagles ahead of next month’s crucial World Cup qualifying match against Malawi in Calabar.
“I couldn’t watch the Mandela Challenge game, but I must say that 2-0 victory for the Super Eagles was a fantastic result and a morale-booster for the team ahead of the crucial World Cup qualifying match against Malawi,” Chukwu said.
“Now we can say that the Super Eagles are ready for the Malawi challenge and we can all look forward to qualifying for the next stage of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil,” he added.
“The strength of a good team is the bench. The Mandela Challenge has revealed that Keshi now has options in terms of team selection unlike what we saw at the last Confederations Cup in Brazil, where the Nigerian team struggled due to the absence of some players from the squad that won the Nations Cup in South Africa early in the year,” the man popularly known as Chairman noted.
The captain of the 1980 Nations Cup winning Green Eagles squad, however, cautioned that Super Eagles should not approach the game against Malawi with complacency as a result of Wednesday’s victory against the Bafana Bafana.
“It is important to caution that the Super Eagles should not be over-confident against Malawi as a result of the 2-0 victory against South Africa because a friendly game is a different ball game from a competitive match,” he warned.
