BOKO HARAM: Maiduguri Bombed?

At least three people were killed in Maiduguri, on Sunday, when a group of Christian worshipers coming back from a church service were attacked.

The worshippers were said to be returning from a COCIN Church located in the Gwange area of Maiduguri, the Borno capital.

One of the victims was identified by residents as Simon, a member of the church, who works at a licensing office in Maiduguri. Simon was reportedly killed along with his wife and his son.

In a related development, a traditional ruler in Maiduguri, Shettima Kanurebe, was killed by gunmen in his house at Shehuri, close to the palace of the Shehu of Borno.

Mr. Kanurebe was attacked in his house while he was in the company of a friend, who was identified as a brother-in-law to a former Federal Capital Territory Minister, Abba Gana.

No group has claimed responsibility for the killings, though the insurgent group, Boko Haram, which has claimed responsibility for many previous attacks, had threatened to attack Northern traditional leaders.

Soldiers feared killed

The killings in the two areas of Maiduguri are separate from an explosion which occurred in the Lagos Street of Maiduguri believed to be targeted at men of the Joint Task Force, JTF.

The blast occurred close to a Unity Bank along Bama road. The casualty figure is yet to be ascertained as residents of the area fled for safety fearing a retaliatory attack by the JTF.

The Joint task Force in Maiduguri could not be reached for comment. The three numbers provided by the JTF, 07085464012, 08064174066, 08154429346, were switched off as at the time of this report.
