After being beaten ‘blue and black’ for many years by her husband who is supposed to love and carter for her, a Lagos State based petty trader, Sikiratu Oyetade, has finally taken the bull by the horn as she recently dragged her husband of eight years, Latif Oyetade to court, seeking for the dissolution of the soured union.
The visibly aggrieved mother of two filed for the dissolution on the grounds of what she described as “threat to life, constant beatings, lack of care and
absence of love”. Further buttressing her reasons for opting out of the one-time romantic union, the embattled Sikiratu narrated to the court amid uncontrollable tears how her husband constantly starves her and their children, abuses her on flimsy grounds, and further turning her to a pupil by mercilessly whipping her at nights.

”I met and married Latif in 2004. Shortly after we married, he started maltreating me. He used to give me N200 daily feeding allowance, but even as we started having kids, he never deemed it necessary to increase the money. He gives me N300 to make a pot of soup, yet he expects the soup to last for three days and when it doesn’t, I end up receiving the beating of my life.
“His beatings and whips have become my nightmare. I am now so scared of my husband, because whatsoever I do seem to be a very big offence that warrants beatings at midnights. I have gone into coma on so many occasions”, she narrated to the court.
Sikiratu who also recalled the day she almost lost their six month-old baby to her husband’s beating described the marriage as the worse thing that has happened to her.
“He came back from work that fateful day and met me feeding the baby; we had a little exchange of words and he tried to hit me, the blow mistakenly hit the baby and she fell from my hands. I can no longer condone his incessant abuses; my life is in danger. I pray this honourable court to save my life and grant my request for a formal dissolution of the already collapsed union”, she pleaded.
Countering the allegations leveled against him, the respondent who is a plank seller at Ojo market maintained that his wife often stirs the fights and quarrels that have characterised the union.

He also accused his wife of living a reckless and secret life, which makes him suspicious of her movements.
“My wife is a very stubborn woman, that’s why I often use cane and belts on her. She talks carelessly and has no respect for me. Whenever her phone rings, she would find a flimsy excuse to answer the call outside the house. If I dare ask her who called, then that’s another war coming. Little things that we would settle amicably would lead to serious arguments and could even result to fights. She is well known in the compound where we live and the whole neighbourhood know for her trouble making attitude,” he lamented.
