EXPOSED: Former ABU Dean Of Law Embezzled N16 Million?

Some lecturers of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, under the auspices of the Coalition for Transparency, have petitioned the Minister of Education and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), claiming that a former Dean of the institution’s Faculty of Law, Professor Nuhu Mohammed Jamo, embezzled 16 million Naira, which was donated by the alumni of the faculty.
Professor Jamo, who served in the position between 2010 and 2012, allegedly handed over only 400, 000 to his successor.

The petition, which was signed by one Dr. Armiya’u Dingyadi Umar, also accused the former dean of not accounting for 20 desktop computers donated by the Federal Capital Territory High Court, as well as two brand new photocopiers and a set of five white leather settees for the Dean of Law’s office that were received as donations from alumni.

The petitioners further said that the university’s bursar released the sum of four million Naira to Prof Jamo as faculty-specific charges in 2011 for faculty development, but that Jamo converted the entire money to his personal use.  In September 2012, they said, another four million Naira was due for specific charges but the bursar withheld the money, insisting that the previous four million Naira that had been disbursed must first be accounted for.

They said that efforts to get Jamo to account for the previous four million Naira he had collected failed, and alleged that he used the money to renovate his personal house at Gaskiya, Zaria. Even a set of five leather seats bought by Prof Sani Idris when he was Dean were removed by Jamo and taken to his personal house and put in his visitor’s reception without faculty board approval,” the statement said.

Full text of the petition:
“We write to bring to your notice the fraudulent acts of the immediate past Dean of Law, Prof Nuhu M. Jamo as captured in the petition written by Justice Ishaq Bello of FCT High Court, on behalf of himself and the Chief Judge of the FCT High Court, both being alumni of Faculty of Law, A.B.U. Zari, to the current Dean of Law, Prof Y.Y.Bambale. In the said petition, Justice Ishaq Bello complained of the misappropriation of the funds in the faculty of law alumni account with UBA Zaria branch which was managed by the Board of Trustees appointed by the faculty of law of which he is one of the trustees with Malam Abdurahaman Gimba as chairman.

“The total money in the said account was 16 million naira comprised of 11 million cash in the bank, handed over by Prof Yusuf Aboki, the then dean (2008-2010) and 5 million naira bank draft being pledge redeemed by Alh. Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President of Nigeria. Prof Jamo without approval of, or rendering of any account to the Board of Trustees or the faculty board of law till today, squandered the entire 16 million naira and handed over just 400, 000 to Prof Bambale, the current dean.  Alhaji Gimba therefore resigned his chairmanship of the alumni Board of Trustees of the faculty of law in anger and vowed never to have anything to do with the faculty of law ever again. Justice Ishaq Bello however decided to petition the Dean of Law and copied Prof Yusuf Aboki who is now the chairman of the ABU branch of the ICPC. Justice Ishaq Bello in his petition also demanded an investigation of the whereabouts of the 20 units of brand new desktop computers and two new photocopiers they as alumni donated to the faculty when his investigation reveal that the items though collected by Prof. Jamo in Abuja, did not however reach the faculty.”

“All efforts to get Jamo account for the previous four million naira. He used the money to renovate his personal house at Gaskiya, Zaria. The set of five leather seats bought by Prof Sani Idris when he was Dean were removed by Jamo and taken to his personal house and put in his visitor’s reception without faculty board approval.

‘’Prof Bambale, current Dean has approached Jamo to account for all the above items but he has refused. When threatened with the possibility of the matter being reported to the VC, he replied that it was he who installed the VC and so VC cannot do anything. Jamo boasts instead that it is what they want that the VC will do otherwise they will show him the way out as they did to the former chairman of council, Amb. Bunu Sheriff.

“In view of the fact that we have noticed indeed that Prof Jamo boast is actually true given that the VC indeed does whatever Jamo and his group of internal council members want in order to avoid clashing with them, we decided to publicise this matter hoping that justice will be done. A.B.U. is under siege and needs help before it is grounded by monumental fraud.’’
