Disgruntled staff of Thisday Newspaper today shut down the Apapa, Lagos office of the newspaper.
Sources hinted Pointblanknews.com that the Publisher, Nduka Obaigbena has not paid his staff for close to six months.
Another source who also revealed that Nduka had been running the newspaper company on debt since the past six months, while they owe paper suppliers and suppliers of material for production in the company.
A source in the editorial department said “today is not the first time they are shutting down the company’s operations in Lagos , because Chairman is owing different people and by the time he sees them shutting down he responds quickly and attend to the people”
Another concerned staff in the advert department said “ it is true we have been shut. It is over salaries and it is over six months now, we just hope this is resolved fast”
Contacted the Managing Director, Eniola Bello said the management is having some issues with staff but that it would be resolved. “ We are having some issues with staff but it will be resolved very soon” he told Pointblanknews.com on phone in Lagos.
However, it was business as usual in the company’s Abuja office. The Head Abuja Bureau, Tokunboh Adedoja told Pointblanknews.com that operations were on in Abuja. According to him “ I am not aware of the Abuja situation, but as as this morning when we talked about story ideas there was nothing, Here in Abuja, we are working”
Nduka Obaigbena has just floated an independent television station in far away United Kingdom which is called “Arise TV” where he show cases different fashion with strictly local content . it was not clear if this new venture is a strain on the finances of Leaders and Company Limited.
Few weeks ago, the chairman appealed to the staff to be patient as all efforts were being made to clear the backlog. He also blamed the reconstruction of part of Thisday Abuja, which was destroyed by suicide attack few months ago.
At the entrance of the Apapa office there were placards and cardboards with the inscriptions “ No work no pay”, We no go gree, where is our cooperative money’” “no pay no work”, “we are tired of slavery”
