Policemen attached to Adatan Divisional Headquarters in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, on Saturday, arrested a 45-year-old man, Toyin Sodimu in Temidire community of Oke Apo, Akomoje Abeokuta for raping his own daughter.
The victim, 16-year-old Miss Sodimu went to report the ugly incident to the police in Adatan division after her father had raped her in her room at about 2 am on Saturday.
The spokesman of the Ogun State Command of the Nigerian Police Force, Muyiwa Adejobi confirmed that the victim has been taken to the General Hospital, Abeokuta by the police for examination and treatment.?
He also told Street Journal that the state’s Commissioner of Police, “CP Ikemefuna Okoye has ordered a full scale investigation into the horrible incident and has vowed to make the suspect face the wrath of the law if found wanting so as to serve as deterrent to such cruel and devilish fathers who may want to venture into raping their daughters in the state”.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police has also sent a passionate appeal to parents, especially mothers to keep watch on their children and avoid collapse of marriages which is perceived to be a catalyst to absurd cases like this. CP Okoye urged rape victims to always emulate this victim’s bravery to report any rape case which will help the police tackle rape and related offences in the state.
While speaking on efforts aimed at reducing rape incidents, the Ogun State Police Command’s spokesman, Mr Adejobi stated that the command will always partner with the Ministry of Women Affairs and social Development in the state to profer a lasting solution to this menace of rape, gender violence and child abuse as the command will improve on strengthening its Anti Human Trafficking And Child Labour Unit to be effective.
This is the second reported rape case within a week in the Ogun State capital. Incidentally, both victims are under 17 years of age. A 24-year-old carpenter was arrested last week for defiling a girl of 9 years old.
In a statement signed by the PPRO, the Ogun State Police Command urged the people of Ogun State to always cooperate with the police in getting rid of crimes and social vices in the state; and relate with the Anti Human Trafficking and Child Labour Unit of the Command.
