• Needs N5m for urgent surgery
Prosper Obande Ogenyi was born on June 6,
this year, hale and hearty. Her parents were happy for his handsome
looks and size. His naming ceremony was well celebrated, being the first
baby boy in the family of three children. But soon after, trouble
started.
After five weeks, he developed slight fever, accompanied by cough
and catarrh. He was also breathing profusely and was very restless. He
could neither sleep nor eat well. He cried regularly. It was then that
his parents knew that there was a problem.Without delay, he was taken to
the General Hospital, Isolo, where he was examined and drugs
administered to him. But when the symptoms persisted, he was referred to
the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) Ikeja on July 14.
There, various tests were conducted on him and nothing was detected as
the major cause of his problem. However, he was given medications for
pneumonia and other symptoms. And after some days, the problem subsided
and he was discharged. His father, Innocent, told Daily Sun that five
days after he was discharged from LASUTH, the symptoms returned. “This
time around, when he begins to cough, it seizes to stop, he does not
breathe and it seems as if he will die immediately. So, we returned to
LASUTH where they conducted more tests and found out that he has a hole
in the heart.
He explained that he was amazed and did not know what to do when he received the information. “When I was told that what my boy had been battling with is a hole in the heart, I screamed and did not know what next to do, having spent the whole money I had to take him here and there, and I know what is involved in the surgery. So, I met the doctor in charge and he told me that our baby would have to undergo surgery.
He therefore asked me to go and look for money for that, while they placed him on oxygen to sustain him, pending when I would be able to raise some money for the surgery. I made further moves and in the process, I met some Indian doctors in Nigeria that promised to link us with some hospitals in India that would conduct a successful heart surgery for our baby. They said the surgery would cost us about N5million.”
Mr. Ogenyi also said that in the process of looking for money for the surgery, his mother died and it became a double responsibility.
He said: “While we were busy battling to save our baby, I received a message from my home town in Benue State that my mother died, and it became a double tragedy for us. Presently, my wife and I have spent the whole money we have and cannot be able to handle the surgery problem alone.”
He’s therefore appealing to the government, corporate bodies, religious organizations and individuals who have the love of God and mankind to help in rescuing the dying child.
His wife, Mrs. Comfort Ogenyi who had been more at the receiving end of the baby’s ill health, said: “I know that, even when times are hard, there are many out there that will not want my baby boy to die, because we do not have money to save his live.
I know that Prosper will not die in this problem. He is not destined to die. Otherwise, he should have died by now. Many of the children in LASUTH with the same problem are dead already. One of the women who were in the same ward with me called to tell me that her own baby later died as the battle to save him was on. But God has a purpose for our child. So, children of God should rally round to save him. And I believe he will be a testimony. ”
Mrs. Ogenyi also said that medical experts advised that the surgery should be conducted without delay in order to save Prosper, adding that he is presently surviving on oxygen.
All support should be channelled to Prosper Obande Ogenyi through his dedicated United Bank for Africa (UBA) account. The account number is 2064954554. The family can be reached on 08032372956.
