A pastor of the church allegedly witnessed the deal.
Two members of Living Faith Church, aka Winners Chapel, Lagos, Victor Akogwu and Emmanuel Nda-Oni, were on Tuesday arraigned in Lagos, and charged with defrauding another member of N1.7 million.
Mr. Akogwu, 28, and Mr. Nda-Oni, 37, both residents of Block 116, Flat 2, Jakande Estate, Lekki, are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and obtaining under false pretences before a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.
The prosecutor, Chidi Okoye, told the court that the accused committed the offences on January 22, at No 4, Agungi Ajiran Road, Lekki, Lagos.
He said that the accused induced Tobias Chinedu to enter into an agreement to invest the N1.7 million in their diesel business for a percentage of the profit.
“They sold Chinedu the idea of depositing the sum of N1.7 million into their account with Sterling Bank in order to boost it and enable them to receive sponsorship from the bank.
“Three of them then signed the agreement in the presence of one of the pastors of the church, namely, Pastor Sunny Chukwu.
“Chinedu was meant to get back his money from them after three weeks but after more than one month, he got nothing,’’ the prosecutor said.
Mr. Okoye, a police Inspector, said that their victim later found out that the money in the account had been cleaned out and that the diesel business was a hoax.
The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Sections 409 and 312 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State, 2011.
Section 312 provides that if convicted, the accused are liable to 15 years’ imprisonment
The accused pleaded not guilty.
The Magistrate, Oyindamola Ogala, granted the accused bail in the sum of N500, 000 each with two sureties each in like sum.
She adjourned the case to May 6.
