DISTURBING: Borno State, Epidemic Looms?

Epidemic looms in Borno
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET), in Borno State, on Tuesday, warned residents on possibility of the outbreak of diseases as the hot weather condition prevailed in the state.
Zakariyau Darazo, the General Manager of the agency in the state, said: “The current hot weather condition is likely to continue for some time especially in Maiduguri. This is because the onset of this year's rain season is put at about June 14, based on the 2013 weather predictions”.
He advised individuals to take precautionary measures against the spread of diseases by sleeping in well ventilated rooms and to avoid overcrowding at nights.
“People should avoid sleeping in overcrowded rooms to prevent spread of contagious diseases,” he said. “Individuals should sleep in well ventilated rooms or sleep outside if they can.”
He said that diseases such as meningitis were known to thrive during intense weather conditions, hence the need to take steps to prevent them.
“Individuals should report suspicious disease outbreaks to the nearest medical centre for attention,” Darazo said.
He said, however, that the state had a prospect for bumper harvest going by the 2013 predictions.
“We are going to witness good rainfall this year going by the predictions,” he said. “Our farmers must prepare very well to take full advantage of the good rainfall predicted.”
The temperature in Maiduguri currently fluctuates between 35  and 44 degrees celsius.
