President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday took another step towards ensuring peace and stability in the troubled areas in the Northern part of the country as he ordered that all women held in connection with the activities of the Boko Haram sect in the country be released. The directive was issued hours after the Senate approved the President’s declaration of state of emergency in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states.
A statement issued by the Ministry of Defence on Tuesday made it known that the directive to set the women apprehended in connection with terrorist activity free was ”aimed at enhancing peace efforts in Nigeria”.
Street Journal’s findings also revealed that the move may go a long way in pacifying members of the Boko Haram sect who have been clamouring for the release of their members in custody. A few weeks ago, the sect announced and showed a video of women and children kidnapped by its members. The sect demanded the release of wives and children of its members in exchange for the release of the hostages.
The statement reads in part: “the measure, which is in line with presidential magnanimity to enhance peace efforts in the country, will result in freedom for suspects, including all women under custody.”
Street Journal also gathered that efforts will be made to rehabilitate the freed detainees.
