The former governor is wanted for money laundering in the U.K.
A fugitive former Governor of Bayelsa State, Diepriye Alamieyeseigha, on Monday urged Nigerians to be patriotic as the nation commemorated her 53rd Independence anniversary.
Mr. Alamieyeseigha said in Port Harcourt that Nigerians should put forward useful ideas that could move the nation forward.
“As the nation marks her 53rd Independence, Nigerians must put in individual ideas and selfless services geared toward improving the country,” he said.
The former governor said although the country had recently experienced some challenges in her democracy, it had also recorded numerous achievements.
According to him, the political crisis in the country is an experience necessary for preparing the country for the challenges of the future.
Mr. Alamieyeseigha, however, cautioned some Nigerians who had subjected the country to crises urging them to refrain from such unpatriotic acts.
He said patriotism was a task for all citizens, urging Nigerians to be their own agents of change for a better society.
“Man is the change agent not the institution. Man has the ability to change any institution; so if Nigeria will be better, it depends on us.
“Good governance is a task for every Nigerian. We should change our negative attitudes and develop positive ones. It’s our duty to serve our country as agents for positive change.
“Our culture, attitude to work, leadership and followership obligations must be rededicated to the realisation of true a democracy in the country,”he said.
Mr. Alamieyeseigha, who was recently pardoned by the Jonathan administration following his conviction for fraud while in office as governor, is wanted by U.K. authorities for jumping bail after he was arrested for money laundering.
The U.K. government has already written to the federal government seeking Mr. Alamieyeseigha’s extradition to England to face trial.
