SpectraNet, World’s Most Crime Infested ISP?

Nigeria has again hit the global spotlight for its internet notoriety.
A new survey in the Netherlands has identified SpectraNet, a Nigerian Internet Service Provider (ISP), as the world’s most crime-infested; with over 62 per cent of the website hosted by the Lagos-based company found to be sending spam messages.
SpectraNet has the highest proportion spam of the 42,201 ISPs studied by Giovane Cesar Moreira Moura of the centre for Telematics and Information Technology at the University of Twente, Netherlands.
SpectraNet is yet to respond to our request for comment.
Mr. Moreira Moura describes these websites that specialises in spamming and phishing as “bad neighbourhood” as they could be compared to real life dangerous neighbourhoods.
The survey also found that a single ISP in India was responsible for 7 per cent of the spamming websites in the world, while more than half of the world’s junk mails come from 20 ISPs mostly based in India Vietnam and Brazil.
The survey showed that these malicious websites tend to specialise in a type of attack. While Asian malicious ISPs specialise in sending spam, their dodgy counterpart in the U.S. are experts in Phishing.
Mr. Moreira Moura said his findings could help boost internet security as the majority of the spamming and phishing websites operate in unique small communities that can be easily isolated.
