At least two primaries are being held.
At least two parallel governorship primaries of the Peoples Democratic Party are being held in Anambra State to elect the party’s candidate for the November governorship election in the state.
The Anambra PDP faction led by Ken Emeakayi is holding its congress at the Women Development Centre while the faction led by Ejike Ogbuebego is holding its congress at Emmaus Hotel. Both are being held in Awka, the state capital.
The Emeakayi faction of Anambra PDP is recognised by the party’s national secretariat while the Ogbuebego faction is recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
The Ogbuebego faction is loyal to Senator Andy Uba who is also Chairman of Senate Committee on INEC and governor of the state for 17 days in 2007.
The PDP national leadership made several unsuccessful attempts recently to get INEC to recognise the Emeakayi faction.
An aspirant, Tony Nwoye, however, told PREMIUM TIMES on phone on Saturday afternoon that he was “aware of only one congress.”
Another aspirant, troubled about the development, told PREMIUM TIMES that “there is trouble in Anambra here o.”
A third congress is reportedly being held at Alex Ekwueme Square; while there are reports of violence at the Women Development Centre venue of the Emekayi led PDP congress.
The development means at least two people would emerge as PDP candidates for Anambra after Saturday’s congresses.
More detail soon....
