Gunmen attacked three Plateau villages killing 33 people, residents have said.
The gunmen, suspected to be Fulani assailants, invaded Bolgan,
Karkashi, and Magama villages in Langtang South Local Government Area of
Plateau State on Wednesday night killing the victims including
secondary school students.
The Police in Plateau say they are yet to get the full details of the
attack. The police spokesperson, Felicia Anselem, told PREMIUM TMES on
phone that security personnel have been redeployed to the affected area.
Residents said many victims of the incidents were secondary school
students who are writing the ongoing National Examination Council, NECO,
examination for final year secondary school students.
A resident, Mark Lipdo, confirmed that over twenty four people were
killed although the death toll may be more as others people are still
reported missing.
According to Mr. Lipdo, the coordinator of Stephanus foundation, a
Jos-based non-governmental organization, the attackers followed their
victims on motorcycles blocking their escape before shooting them.
PREMIUM TIMES also learnt that several houses and vehicles were burnt down while
the three villages have been virtually deserted. A resident of
Langtang, who pleaded not to be named, blamed security officials for not
taking proactive action in curtailing the killings.
Residents who escaped said Bolgan Village has been completely burnt down with nine people confirmed killed there.
At Magama Village, most of the victims were children and the elderly.
The father and brother of a cleric, Nandip Miri, of the COCIN church in
Langtang, are believed to have died in the attack.
Reacting to this development, the senator representing Plateau South
in the National Assembly, Victor Lar, appealed to the people to remain
calm and report any suspicious movement to security agencies for
necessary action.
Plateau has witnessed several ethno-religious attacks in different local governments leading to the death of hundreds of people.
