SURPRISING: Jonathan Scrap Research Institutes, Commercialize National Theatre?

As part of the implementation of the white paper on the Steve Orosanye committee on the rationalisation of agencies and parasta-tals, Federal Government, yesterday, resolved to scrap some research institutes.
Others would be realigned to make them meet their goals.
Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, disclosed this at the end of the Federal Executive Council meeting yesterday.
He added that at the end of deliberations on the white paper, the council also decided that the existing river basins in the country and some national monuments such as the National Theatre would be commercialised.
According to Maku, the decision to realign some of the research institutes, especially those under the Ministry of Science and Technology, is to ensure that they have noticeable impact on the scientific development of the country, adding that some would be alligned to universities.
He said a committee was empaneled, headed by Shamsudeen Usman, Minister of National Planning, to come up with details on the institutes that would be affected and report within two weeks.
On the river basins and the National Theatre, Maku said the essence was to make them more viable while still being relevant to the nation.
He said: “We believe that research that is disconnected from the industry does not produce results, so we believe research centres must concentrate on new ideas.”
