Nigerian religious leaders who own private jets came under attack on Monday when Pastor of the Latter Rain Assembly and Convener of the Save Nigeria Group (SNG), Tunde Bakare, declared that they would be the first victims of a revolution which, he predicted, would soon break out in the country.
His opinion is coming at a time concerned observers are asking questions concerning the legendary wealth of Nigerian religious leaders who are buying private jets.
President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Ayo Oritsejafor, last week, joined the league of Nigerian pastors of luxury when he was reported to have received a private jet worth millions of dollars on the occasion of his 40th anniversary on the pulpit.
Bakare also predicted the same fate for ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo whom he slammed severally for daring to predict an impending revolution in the country.
“Obasanjo said there would be a revolution in Nigeria; when the revolution comes, it would fall on his (Obasanjo’s) head,” he said.
The fiery civil rights leader spoke at a lecture organized to celebrate his 58 birthday in Lagos.
The lecture, entitled ‘Reparations: What Nigeria owes the tortoise,’ was delivered by Pius Adesanmi, a Nigerian Associate Professor of English and Literature at Carleton University, Canada.
“We have seen what those who are not well-trained have done to our nation,” he said, adding “Obasanjo must explain how he came by his farm, how he came by his huge house.”
He continued: “I will also go to my own constituency and ask ‘where are you getting these private jets from? Where are you getting the money from?
“The havoc that religious institutions have done to our nation – when the revolution comes, it will not spare us.”
Vexed by the acquisitive activities of religious leaders in the country, he remarked that they deserved what was happening to churches and mosques.
“I am not inciting the public against the church and the mosque, but the congregation must demand explanation from their leaders, they must demand to know where they are getting the money; if it is not from the church offering then it is from Abuja – all general overseers must go to prison.
“If the revolution does not begin in the church, it cannot spread; if it does not begin in the mosque, it will not spread, because they control the population.”
