UNBEARABLE: Over 19,000 Borno Teachers On Indefnite Strike?


The National Union of Teachers,NUT, Borno state chapter has embarked on an indefinite sit at home strike to press for the implementation of N18,000 minimum wage for teachers in primary and universal Basic Education levels across the 27 local government areas of the state.
The state chairman of the NUT, Comrade Bulama Abiso, in an interview with newsmen in Maiduguri said the strike was in compliance with the communiqué reached by the NEC of the union held in Asaba, Delta state, on 17th and 18th April, 2013 that all state wings whose state governments are yet to implement the N18,000 minimum wage to embark on indefinite sit at home strike with effect from 1st June 2013.
He said that the state council had forwarded the directive of the national body of the union to the state Head of Service and the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftancy Affairs, but had not received response from them yet.
He stated that the strike was mainly for teachers at primary school and Junior secondary schools under the SUBEC, adding that the strike does not affect just Borno state but also Sokoto, Benue and other states.
Comrade Abiso said “ it is unfortunate that teachers under the payroll of the SUBEC are receiving only N4,000 as compared to their counterparts on the payroll of the state Government who are receiving N20,000 per month
he said they have 1,897 primary schools across the state with about N20,000 teachers and called on the teachers to observe the sit at home strike till further notice, as the union was ready to fight for the course of its members.
A pupil, Isa Adam who spoke to our correspondent, said that they all went to school, but were shocked that their teachers were nowhere around the school.
A parent Mallam Bukar Fantami, said the strike will not only affect the education of their children but will affect the entire education sector, calling on the government to do something about the situation, believing that as a listening governor, Shettima would respond positively.
